Father: Daughter Attacked By Fellow Student in Apalachin

A local parent says his 11-year-old daughter was attacked at a school in Apalachin and says he has the video to prove it.

John Winkler says the video shows his daughter being attacked by an older student at the Broome-County BOCES West Learning Center on Tuesday.

He said the video was on social media for about six to eight hours before being taken down.

The Learning Center is an alternative school which has students from a number of districts.

A voice on the video can be heard saying, "hit her, hit her." Winkler and his attorney say the school has told them they are investigating.

"It's kind of striking and disturbing how this was orchestrated. There's a student obviously confronting her, there's another student with a cell phone out, there are several students gathered around on both sides and the disturbance goes on for half a minute, a minute. Where are the teachers? Where is the person who is supposed to be running that classroom? That's the question we really want answered," said Torrance Schmitz, attorney for John Winkler.

Both Winkler and his attorney have a number of questions and say what they want now is to ensure Winkler's daughter is safe when she returns to school.

Winkler says it was a hall monitor, not teacher, who broke up the fight.  He says his daughter has a swollen face and is very scared.

Winkler and his attorney say at least one student has been suspended.

Broome-Tioga BOCES released a statement confirming there was an incident involving two young ladies at the West Learning Center and that it was handled quickly and according to procedure.
