Our latest Amphenol Aerospace Athlete of the Week was probably the easiest pick we've had to make all year, Binghamton University and Union-Endicott's own Emily Mackay. Mackay just accomplished the pinnacle of her career, so far, qualifying for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

But Emily knows she didn't clinch a spot in the Olympics alone, crediting her hometown, her trainers, and her college coach Annette Acuff.

Mackay competed as a Binghamton Bearcat for five seasons, and was a five-time all-American under Acuff's leadership Since graduating, coach Acuff says Mackay has grown the most in her running tactics, allowing her to compete at a high level and ultimately place second at U.S. Olympic trials last Sunday.

"I think the tactics are something in the 1500 that she needed more experience with at the professional level," Acuff said. "She was just getting started with the 1500 at an elite level her last year here. So I think things are really starting to kind of pay off for her now."

Fox 40 spoke with Mackay before competing at the Trials and the former U-E Tiger and Bearcat spoke about her excitement having her college coach in attendance.

"I'm super excited about it," Mackay said. "I think it'll be just huge having her there. I'm really close with her and she knows me really well as an athlete and so having her there is going to be super comforting and it's going to be so much fun."

Fox 40 will have more from Mackay and Acuff on Fox 40 News at 6 and 10 next week as Mackay preps for the 2024 Paris Olympics. For more on the Trials race, go here.
