A Newark Valley High School senior has passed away after a car accident.

According to the Tioga County Sheriff's Office, just before 1 a.m. on Sunday, June 23rd, the office responded to Bailey Hollow Road in Newark Valley for a motor vehicle crash. The office says the vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree. All four occupants were taken to Wilson Hospital with injuries.

The sheriff's office says 18-year-old Connor I. VanZile passed away from his injuries at the hospital. A message on the Newark Valley Central School District website says all four people involved are students. The conditions of the other three students is not known. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.

The message from the superintendent reads as follows: "Dear Newark Valley Families,

It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that I share tragic news with you. This morning, we learned that a senior at Newark Valley High School died in a car accident. Three other students were also involved in the accident.

The profound impact of this news has left our close-knit community in shock and grief-stricken. Our thoughts and condolences are with the families as they navigate through this unimaginable tragedy. During these challenging times, it is vital that we come together to support and comfort one another.

We will be offering counseling services this week to any student in need. We will have our crisis team available along with additional counselors available in the school to assist students as they express their feelings related to the loss of a classmate and friend. The most important thing we can do is to be supportive and encourage an open expression of feelings. If you feel your child needs special assistance or is having a great deal of difficulty coping, please do not hesitate to call. Thank you for your continued support of our school community as we work together to help everyone affected."
