100 Years Ago is brought to you by Broome Recycles.

100 years ago, it was Memorial Day, 1924, and more than 5,000 people gathered at Courthouse Square to pay tribute to Broome County’s fallen heroes. There was a big parade. Services were held at the cemeteries and more than 1,000 graves were decorated with flags and flowers.

That afternoon, everyone gathered back at the courthouse for another ceremony – the unveiling of a memorial statue honoring Broome County’s greatest statesman, Daniel S. Dickinson.

Dickinson was one of the founders of the Village of Binghamton back in 1834. He was the first mayor of the village and went on to serve as state senator, lieutenant governor and U.S. Senator. He died in 1866 and is buried in Spring Forest Cemetery.

The memorial statue is placed on a pedestal directly in front of the Broome County Courthouse, and it was unveiled on this day by Dickinson’s great-great grandson.

And that was the news on Memorial Day, 100 years ago.
