Port Dickinson Elementary School planted a piece of history on its campus today thanks to the addition of a new tree on Monday, May 6.

An Amelia Earhart Sugar Maple, the tree is an offshoot tracing back to the original maple tree on the female aviator's property. The Chenango Valley School District received the donation through the Nimmonsburg Hillcrest Rotary.

Teaching students about environmental care and the history of Earhart, the tree can potentially spark new interests for students says Superintendent of Chenango Valley Larry Dake.

"We never know what the spark is going to be for a student and students have so many different interests that this tree could be a spark of a student who maybe is interested in history, maybe interested in exploring, maybe interested in just learning more about why trees and certain things are in different parts of our community," Dake said. "So hopefully it's a spark for a student and I think it'll be an exciting thing for us to have."
