A homeless man is facing charges after the Johnson City Police Department says he assaulted two people, including a police officer on Sunday.

According to police, they responded to the Johnson City Walmart around 12:50 p.m. for a report of an assault. When they arrived, they found a 69-year-old assault victim. An investigation that included interviews and reviewing video footage determined the man had been shopping when he was randomly assaulted by 33-year-old Angel V. Vasquez.

Police say the video footage showed Vasquez approaching the man and randomly began punching him until he fell to the ground, at which point, Vasquez began stomping on the victim's head. Vasquez was arrested, charged with Assault in the 3rd degree, and taken to JCPD for processing.

Once he was at the police department, Vasquez again became violent. While officers were attempting to move him to a holding cell, Vasquez began to fight with them and grabbed an officer by the neck and began choking him.

The officer did receive minor injuries, but did not require treatment. The Walmart assault victim was treated at a local hospital for his injuries.

Vasquez was arraigned and taken to Broome County Jail in lieu of $500 bail. In addition to the Assault in the 3rd degree charge stemming from the incident in Walmart, he was also charged with Criminal Obstruction of Breathing, Obstructing Governmental Administration in the 2nd, and Assault in the 2nd - Assault Upon a Police Officer.
