Binghamton University's Student Association held a vote on Tuesday on whether or not the University should prohibit involvement with organizations or businesses that support Israel.

Over 300 students gathered at the Old Union Hall for tonight's meeting, so much so that there was an overflow crowd forced to stay out of the hall. The association was taking up whether to approve a resolution supporting what is called the B.D.S. movement which stands for boycott, divestment, and sanctions. This would prohibit the board for doing business with organizations and companies with ties to the Israeli government.

"If funding is taken away from the Jewish organizations or Israel based organizations that can really hurt the Jewish student life," said Binghamton senior Hannah Kirsch. "Binghamton is a place that has generally been very welcoming for Jews and I hope that does not change ever."

Other Binghamton senior Sam Weingard says that if this resolution gets approved that it will not help the B.U. community.

"One third of students on this campus are Jewish people," said Weingard. "The bill that might pass tonight is one that does not support the people that represent this campus community."

Another student at Binghamton Barbara Zavala says that this vote and the turnout allows diversity and free speech.

"A lot of people have a political opinions and that it's good for us to talk about our political opinions," said Zavala.

Tonight's resolution does not affect Binghamton student groups or the administration, however supporters are calling on the University to apply the same policies.
