Amy Mercik has been teaching for 28 years, starting her career at Broome-Tioga BOCES teaching high school special education before coming to the Chenango Valley School District.

She taught 6th grade in the district before switching to 2nd grade 11 years ago.

"Second grade truly is where my heart is. I had a second-grade teacher that I absolutely loved, and she probably is the reason that I am a teacher," said Mercik.

She says the kids are eager to learn and always ask questions.

One thing Mercik is big on in her classroom is meeting kids where they are, and making sure each student learns at their own pace.

"I differentiate for my kids. So my kids that might not be where I need them to be yet, I'm making sure that I am pushing them forward and giving them reading materials and pieces of things to work on that they're ready for at this moment in time. And then obviously my on grade level and my above, I'm pushing them as much as I can," said Mercik.

Mercik also keeps things fun and is known for her love of owls, keeping her room decorated to share her love with the kids.

Something that helps her connect with students, as Mercik sees connections as the gateway to effective learning.

Mercik says,"I do run a tight ship, but they know that I have their back and I love them 100% and will do anything for them. That, I think, is what helps us to move as far as we possibly can academically, because I do make those connections with them. And without that, I don't think I would see the academic growth that I do see."
