A Norwich man was arrested and charged after he lured police to his home and attempted to stab one of the responding officers.

According to Norwich Police, two officers responded to a Hayes Street residence for a report of a burglary in progress. When they arrived, the resident, Skylar Rubottom, attempted to stab one of the officers and then threw the knife at the officer, striking him in the shoulder.

The department says it is believed that Rubottom invented the burglary story and attempted to ambush the officers in a suicide by cop scenario. The Norwich Police chief says the bulletproof vest the officer was wearing protected him from the 13-inch chef knife Rubottom used in the attack.

Rubottom was charged with the following:

  • Attempted Murder in the 2nd degree
  • Menacing a Police Officer
  • Attempted Assault in the 2nd degree
  • Resisting Arrest
  • Falsely Reporting an Incident in the 3rd degree

Rubottom is being held at the Norwich Police Department, awaiting arraignment.
