Tina Hess has been teaching at Port Dickinson Elementary for 20 years, and she says her love for teaching has been there since before she started.

Hess took some time off to start her family after a few years in college but continued to pursue a career in education years later.

Once she made the decision, she said she's never looked back.

Hess said, "I love my job. It's such an honor to be able to work with and build relationships with my students and their families and to watch them grow into great little human beings. We really do become a family for the whole school year, and it's such a magical year."

Hess is in her 20th year at Port Dickinson she says it's not hard to love what she does, as every day brings something new.

"We use hands-on activities. We use music, we use songs, art projects, and storytelling. There's so much. No two days are exactly alike. They're full of different things and you can be as silly as you want," said Hess.

Most popular among the kids is getting up and dancing, especially to one of their favorite groups on YouTube, Pop See Koo.

Aside from dancing, students also do a standard curriculum, which involves reading, writing, math, and science.

Hess says it's easy to keep the students engaged since they are always eager to learn.

"At this age, they love school, they love to be here, they love you. They can't wait to come in every day. They are just excited to be a part of school," says Hess.

Hess says seeing the kids enjoy their time in the classroom, and their desire to grow and learn, tells her she's doing things right.

"I really want to have a positive impact on my students lives. I mean, most of all, I want them to look back at their time in kindergarten and I want them to remember it with love in their hearts, a smile on their face, and know that I really care about them," said Hess.
