Eight...that's the amount of different leading scorers the Greene girls' basketball team has had this season.

Our latest Amphenol Aerospace Team of the Week takes us out to Chenango County where the Trojans are trudging through Section IV with nothing, but a team effort.

18-1, the Green Trojans are winners of 15 straight, but it was the team's lone loss of the season that sparked them up.

"Honestly, I think after we lost to Sidney, like, as crazy as that sounds," said senior forward Lyla Biefeldt. "I think after we lost to Sidney, we knew we had more in us. We knew we could have had that game. We knew we had so much in us for the season. And I think that's when we just snapped in, we were like, okay, we can go far this year. Let's just recognize each other's talent and trust each other and that's what we've done."

The definition of a...

"Team approach," said head coach Dave Gorton. "We have had eight different girls be the leading scorer this year. Eight different girls have scored double figures this year from game to game. We don't know necessarily going in who's going to score, but somebody always does."

And if they don't score a lot, the defense comes in handy. The Trojans allowing a suffocating 28 points a game through 19 starts.

"Determined and fierce on defense," said senior guard Molly Cornell. "We just want the ball, the first thing in our mind is that we want the ball, we want to score. So that contributes to our defense a really good amount and we're super fast and that helps us a lot."

Unselfishness and defense, a recipe for success.

"It's amazing, it's awesome," Cornell said.

No game has represented that more this season than the MAC Championship where the Trojans pulled away late and avenged last year's loss.

"Last year, we had a heartbreaking loss in the MAC championship game to Unatego," Gorton said. "They're a great, great team, good program. And this year to come out and defeat them was really big for us."

A game that Greene hopes is just the precursor for the playoffs and beyond, going into Sectionals as the two-seed and fourth-ranked team in the latest New York State Writers' Poll for Class C.

"I think we're going to go really far," Biefeldt said. "Honestly, I think we all really want it and to come off of that big win against Unatego, especially after losing them last year, I think that momentum is going to carry us really far this year."

But no matter what, the Trojans are gonna be prepared one way or the other.

"I think the two things that we've learned is that your defense will always determine ultimately your success," Gorton said. "And the second is that if we stick together, we can overcome tough moments. There's always tough moments every game. And if you go to the next play, the last play, you can overcome the problems you've had up to then."
