The West Middle School community is mourning the loss of an eighth-grade student who was killed in a motor vehicle crash over the weekend.

In an email sent Wednesday afternoon, Binghamton Schools Superintendent Tonia Thompson notified the Binghamton City Schools community of Maliya Hardenbergh's death.

"It is with a heavy heart that I am writing to inform you of the passing of Maliya Hardenbergh, an eighth grader in 8B at West Middle School, who was involved in a motor vehicle accident out of town over the weekend. Our hearts go out to Maliya’s family as they grieve this tragic loss," said Thompson.

Thompson described Hardenbergh as "a lovely student" who will be "warmly remembered" by her classmates, teachers and staff.

Thompson said the district is providing support to students and staff, adding that counselors were available at the school on Tuesday and will be on hand for anyone who needs help.
