Fatal Plane Crash in Norwich
A Binghamton man is dead after a plane crash in Norwich over the weekend.
The Chenango County Sheriff's Office says Shawn McMahon of Binghamton was the sole person inside the plane.
According to the National Transportation Safety Board, the Cessna 182D plane crashed just before 3 p.m. on Sunday one mile west of Lt. Warren Eaton Airport.
The sheriff's office says McMahon had taken off from the airport and was attempting to return to the airport at the time of the crash.
The NTSB says it crashed under unknown circumstances.
An investigation has been opened by the NTSB and the FAA and an investigator is responding to the scene. He or she will document the site, plane, gather any possible witness statements and surveillance video, flight track or radar data and any communications with air traffic control facilities.
A preliminary report is expected in two to three weeks and the final report can be expected to be completed in 12 to 24 months.
