100 years ago it is Memorial Day and this community has again paid a solemn tribute to those who have served their country in all its wars.

At the soldiers’ and sailors’ monument on the Courthouse Square, ceremonies included the singing of “America,” and a reading of Lincoln’s Gettysburg speech, followed by the firing of three volleys and the sounding of Taps.

A service was held on the banks of the Chenango River which concluded with the dropping of flowers from an airplane overhead. That was followed by the big parade, which included 30 aged veterans of the Civil War.

Finally, the new C. Fred Johnson Park in Johnson City opened for the first time today, and more than 7,500 people rode on the merry-go-round. With 72 horses, it is one of the largest ever built.

And that was the news on Memorial Day, 1923.
