April jobs data from the New York State Department of Labor (DOL) shows the Southern Tier unemployment rate is 2.7 percent, down .4 percent from the same time a year ago and .8 percent dip from March’s number of 3.5 percent. 

The Southern Tier Region ranks sixth, according to the DOL, with the Capital Region at number one with an unemployment rate of 2.3 percent and New York City at the bottom. The Southern Tier labor market comprises eight counties, including Broome, Tioga, Chenango, Delaware and Tompkins. 

The Binghamton Metropolitan area, made up of Broome and Tioga counties, is also at 2.7 percent, marking a .6 percent fall (3.3%) year to year and .9 decline (3.6%) from March. The Binghamton region ranks 9th out of 15 metro areas across the state. 

At the county level, Broome County's rate for April is 2.7 percent, ranked 29th in the state as compared to 38th in April 2022. The unemployment rate for the 13th-ranked Tioga County is 2.4 percent.

Regional unemployment numbers are lower than the state and national numbers, 3.7 percent and 3.1 percent, respectively.
