Veterans are to be aware of a scam involving the filing of their military discharge papers.

The Broome County Clerk's Office and the Veterans Services Director are warning veterans about a scam out of Phoenix, Arizona that involves paying for copies of their discharge papers, also commonly referred to as the DD214.

The county clerk's office says the scam is by a group called DD214 Direct and says the group will file the papers and charge money to do so.

The group is charging $79 for a copy and $100 for an email and hard copy.

The office says when veterans file their papers with the clerk's office, the original papers are returned and a free certified copy can be provided in person to the veteran at any time.
