3 Bearcats Advanced to Day 2 at NCAA Wrestling Championships
While none of the 4 Bearcats to compete at the 2022 NCAA Wrestling Championships were crowned National Champions, it was still a successful weekend for the program.
For the first time under head coach Kyle Borshoff’s tenure, three of Binghamton University’s wrestlers advanced to day 2 of competition at the NCAA Championships.
Leading the way for the Bearcats was senior Lou DePrez. He won his first two matches in the 197-pound bracket. He then fell to the top seed and eventual National Champion out of Penn State Max Dean in a hard fought 4-3 decision.
In 285-pounds senior Joe Doyle bounced back in the consolation bracket after falling in the opening round of the championships. Doyle won two matches in the consolation bracket, most notably a 14-4 major decision over Maryland’s Luke Luffman.
While Junior Jacob Nolan did not make it to the second day of competition, after falling to Michigan’s Logan Massa in the first round he did pick up a win in the consolation bracket over Maryland's Dominic Solis.
Sophomore Brevin Cassella dropped his opening round match against Harvard’s Philip Conigliaro by a tight 6-4 decision. He bounced back with a dominant 6-0 decision victory over Cleveland State’s Riley Smucker in the consolation bracket.
Ultimately a strong season for Bearcats wrestling as they finish with 4 NCAA qualifiers and a total of six wins at the championships in Detroit.
