For the first time in over a year, the Vestal Public Library is fully open to the community. When they walk through the doors, it will be into a very different space.

“We're kind of embracing the bookstore model," says Paul Chapman, the Vestal Public Library Director.

The library has moved around shelves to create more open space, added high-top tables up front, a new computer section, and counters with outlets to plug in laptops.

Alongside other New York libraries, the Vestal Library closed its doors last March due to COVID-19. Chapman says they took the negative situation and decided to turn it into something positive and productive. He says the staff took the time to re-evaluate the space and what the community needed out of it.

“I think libraries need to stay relevant, we’re always evolving. Our collection is a living thing, we’re always adjusting to what the community and patrons need," says Chapman.

Libraries have made many adjustments over the years, moving beyond just books and into a place for technical resources as well. Now, after the COVID-19 pandemic, the Vestal Library is adjusting to another need in a changing world: outdoor space. Tables and chairs have been added on the front sidewalk of the library and Chapman says picnic tables will be installed on the side of the building. He says the library plans to offer more outdoor programming this summer.

The Vestal Library is open for its full regular hours.
