It has been a turbulent couple of days in the sports world. We're seeing athletes across all sports and levels effected by the Coronavirus fallout. We even have local high school teams that have experienced the whirlwind first hand.

The Johnson City Boys Basketball team knocked off New Paltz Wednesday night in the State Sub-regional round. This advanced them to the state quarterfinals where they were scheduled to face Rye tonight at SUNY Purchase. Then yesterday morning it was announced the game would go on, but without fans in the stands. But then just a couple hours after that while the team was making their food plans for game day, Johnson City's athletic director shared word with the team that the NYSPHSAA had officially postponed all winter sports championships. Wildcats senior Sean Moran says the news was gut wrenching.

"We're all kind of heartbroken to say the least," says Moran. "Especially for our seniors, this is our last chance we're trying to make a state run and to think that a virus can take that away or the pandemic is kind of scary for us."

While they hope this isn't it, JC Boys Basketball Head Coach Bill Spalik says this team has a lot to be proud of. The team won the Section 4 Championship and won the first state playoff game in program history. Despite the sadness with the circumstance, Moran and Spalik agree with the decision to suspend play.

"We get it, it's tough to swallow but we certainly understand at this point that there are bigger things that are going to precede basketball," says Spalik.

The team is continuing to practice for the moment with the hope that the playoffs eventually resume. As of now the word is still that the state playoffs are just postponed. For the moment spring sports are going on as scheduled as well.
