Families learned about animal enrichment at the Binghamton Zoo this Saturday by making toys for the animals and their own pets.

Public Relations Coordinator Rachel Davenport says a lot of visitors do not know what enrichment is. Animals are given an opportunity to promote their natural behaviors through new toys and training to stimulate their brains. Giant plastic eggs called 'Jolly Eggs' are one of these toys used by the animals.

"The zookeepers will spray perfumes or they'll put spices on them...anything new for the animal to smell or to be curious about," said Davenport.

One station in the zoo showed kids how they could make toys for their pets, and included a kiddie pool to forage for their own treats and connect enrichment with humans. There are also talks on different animals by the zookeepers.

Enrichment Weekend continues until Sunday.
