(NICHOLS, NY) -- The Tioga County Sheriff's Office says a Nichols couple was found dead in their home Tuesday in an apparent murder-suicide.

Tioga County deputies responded to 2359 West River Rd. Tuesday morning. According to the sheriff's office, a 911 call came in, reporting that two bodies could be found at that residence.

Upon arrival, deputies discovered the bodies of Leon and Debra Rogers, both 60. The couple, who lived at the residence together, both died of gunshot wounds.

After the investigation and an autopsy of the deceased, detectives determined that Leon Rogers placed the 911 call reporting the incident before or after shooting his wife, and then took his own life.

Neighbors told Fox 40 they noticed sheriff's vehicles outside the Rogers' home throughout the day.

"I didn't really think anything of it but that was earlier today, probably 9:30 or 10:00," said Tammy Humphrey, who lives down the road.

Humphrey said the husband and wife helped her move furniture when her home was damaged in the 2011 flood.

Humphrey said Debbie brought her a casserole and offered to help.

"She was very nice, very sweet."
