The 2011 flood that hit the southern tier shocked area residents and sent the region into crisis mode.

To combat a future emergency, the Medical Reserve Group, or MRC of the Tioga County Health Department hosted an informational meeting for anyone interested in becoming a volunteer.

Led by the American Red Cross, the presentation focused on what to do during an emergency weather situation, and drew on past examples.

"Just have a plan in place. The more people that know how to take care of things the better off we'll be," said Director of the Tioga County MRC Melanie Miller.

"We're very isolated from other people so we need to take care of our own as much as we can."

Miller says you don't have to have any kind of special skills to volunteer.
