Newly-elected Republican State Senator Fred Akshar has been picked to chair the New York State Senate Elections Committee.


New York Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan handed up committee assignments on Wednesday


Akshar, the freshman senator elected to represent the 52nd District in November, will also serve on the following committees: Banks, Cities, Codes, Consumer Protection, Crime Victims, Crime and Corrections, Labor and Rural Resources.


Akshar, a political newcomer, will begin his first-term in the seat long held by former state senator Thomas Libous, Libous was convicted in July of lying to federal investigators and was later sentenced to house arrest.
