David Sweat shot and in police custody -- this after a 3 week long manhunt for he and accomplice Richard Matt who was shot and killed by authorities Friday.

Sweat is responsible for the killing of a Broome County sheriff's deputy back in 2002.

A tremendous effort for law enforcement as it's been 22 days since Richard Matt and David Sweat broke out of the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora.

Matt was shot and killed Friday by authorities and the search continued for Sweat -- until Sunday afternoon.

Sweat was spotted just over a mile from the Canadian Border in Constable, New York before he was shot and captured by law enforcement.

Shortly after Sweat's capture his mother Pamela who expressed her concerns for her son.

"I wish he would have gave up a long time ago. And I wish he would have stayed where he was, instead of leaving there with that guy. I was kind of scared that that guy was going to kill him when he got done with him, but I'm glad he didn't," said David Sweat's Mother Pamela Sweat.

We've also reached out to local law enforcement. Broome County Sheriff Dave Harder expressed his reaction to Sweat's Capture ...

Broome County Sheriff David Harder said, "My initial reaction was great, he is in custody, and the best part of it is is that no officers or civilians got injured. People should realize that, you know, we'll do whatever we have to do to hunt down any killer, any person that escapes. The old say goes, 'leave no stone unturned."

Sweat is being treated at Albany Medical Center.
