Millions of Christians are celebrating Palm Sunday.

And locally people are celebrating as well. The holiday is celebrated the Sunday before Easter Sunday and honors Jesus Christ's return to Jerusalem.

This Sunday hundreds attended St. James Roman Catholic Church in Johnson City and churchgoers were each given a palm leaf at the service.

Palm branches are given as a welcome and victory symbol to Jesus.

Deacon Bill Fitzpatrick said, "It recalls my history with my family. I remember coming to church with them on Palm Sunday and bringing home Palms and making a cross out of them. So it has some nostalgia as well as the religious connotations as well."

The Palm Sunday service also marks the beginning of the Holy Week for Christian churches.
