St. Patrick's Day may be Tuesday but there is a DWI crackdown starting Friday.

Police will run the crackdown through Wednesday, March 18th.

Captain Fred Akshar with the Broome County Sheriff's Department reminds drivers how important it is to have a plan to get home that doesn't include getting behind the wheel if you've been drinking.

Things like calling a cab, having a designated sober driver, or not drinking could prevent tragedies.

Captain Fred Akshar said, "Look I think that things that we've seen in the immediate past just this last Parade Day goes to show how dangerous it is to get behind the wheel while drinking and driving. You know a young woman partially lost her leg and was involved in a very serious accident because somebody got behind the wheel and allegedly drove under the influence."

On Saint Patrick's days from 2009 to 2013, there were 276 people who lost their lives in drunk-driving accidents according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
