The Broome County Sheriff's Office says a man who scammed a Liberty, NY woman out of $36,000 was located in the Town of Dickinson.

According to the office, Village of Liberty (Sullivan County) NY Police began investigating a report of a 76-year-old woman being scammed out of money on May 1st. The woman told police she believed she had a virus on her computer and shortly afterward received a phone call from a man who claimed to be from an anti-virus company.

The man told the victim he could help her get rid of the virus. He instructed her to withdraw money from her bank account so it did not get hacked or stolen due to the virus and the woman withdrew $36,000 in cash and gave it to the man when he arrived at her home, believing it would be deposited into a safer account.

Instead, the man took off with the money. Investigators located Himichal Sagar of India at the Prospect Street hotel, thanks to his rental car. Broome County deputies were able to detain Sagar until Liberty Police arrived to arrest him. The entire $36,000 was recovered in the hotel room.

Sagar was charged by Village of Liberty Police with Grand Larceny in the 3rd degree. He was issued an appearance ticket, but ordered to surrender his passport.
