Over the last year, the Broome County Sheriff's Office has added some new faces, but these aren't your typical recruits.

Marley, one of the office's newest officers, is a golden lab patrolling the halls of the Broome Correctional Facility with partner K9 Investigator Brain Doyle.

"He gets trained on various narcotics for their scents so he can pick up on them, so he can search facility. He'll alert to me when he finds the odor of the narcotics and that's how we pinpoint where the contraband is," Doyle explained.

Training with the state Department of Corrections took two months.

So far, Doyle says Marley's already made a huge impact on contraband.

"He's been a huge deterrent. We've noticed our overdoses have gone down. He's a deterrent for visitation coming in. If anybody tries to smuggle contraband in and he helps us find it in the units a lot faster, so it's kept everybody a lot safer."

But Marley isn't the only K9 BCSO has. German Shepard Raven has been on road patrol since October.

"She's assisted not only our office, but we've been called several times to assist other agencies with those type of things as well," Handler Deputy Thomas Holden said.

Tracking suspects, finding drugs and locating missing people are just some of the things Raven is trained to do.

And when they're patrolling, Deputy Holden says Raven starts conversations.

"She has also been a great addition for community engagement. People see their K-9 on the side of my car, and she's a conversation starter for people may not otherwise engage with us, come over and talk to us, ask questions."

Both handlers added their K9s make work more rewarding.
