BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -

The City of Binghamton Police and Fire department gathered with city officials around the 9/11 Memorial at City Hall on State Street on Wednesday.

Mayor Rich David took a moment of silence and acknowledged all the first responders who left their families behind to help the residents of New York City.

"Many of you didn't even know what many of your assignments would be. You just hopped in your cars and figured when you arrived after three hours, you would know what to do and if you didn't, you would just head to Ground Zero and assist your brothers and sisters," said David.

The 9/11 Memorial on State Street displays a piece of steel beam from the north tower of the World Trade Center that was a gift from New York City to thank all the first responders from Binghamton and Broome County.
