"Bikers For Backpacks" Sends Local Children To Summer Camp

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -

The Salvation Army held its third annual "Bikers for Backpacks" fundraiser this Saturday starting at Southern Tier Harley Davidson. The event included dinner, motorcycle ride, and Beatles tribute show.

The ticket sales help to send children from Broome County to a week-long residential camp in Penn Yann for free.

Bikers ride with a backpack that includes a photo of them and a personal inspirational message. The camper is told that their backpack has been on a 90-mile bike ride, where the bikers ride at their own pace.

"It pulls together people from all over the community. There are people tonight that are going to show up for this show that don't ride motorcycles," said Salvation Army Volunteer Chet Schultz.

The event is in collaboration with Coughlin and Gerhart, area bikers, and The Caverners Beatles Tribute.
