BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -

Over a dozen students are sleeping outside Friday night for the 10th annual Homeless Awareness Sleepout at SUNY Broome.

The event is designed to raise awareness on homelessness in the area and raise funds for the Southern Tier Homeless Coalition to help struggling families and individuals.

"This event is in order to inform the student body here that they are aware of the problem and that they can come up with solutions order to fix it," said Logan Blakeslee, Vice President of Student Activities at SUNY Broome.

SUNY Broome students participating will sleep out on the lawn near the Student Center Quad for one night as their family and friends sponsor them.

"This is a personal thing I've been through this I understand exactly how it feels to be sleeping out and not knowing what's going to happen tomorrow and I know that there's really almost 2,000 people, 300 kids in Broome county right now that are going through the same experience that I want through," said local activist Michael Vasquez, who struggled with homelessness in the past.

The event starts at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 17th and will run to the next morning at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 18th.
