Bearcats Pick Up First Win Of The SeasonPosted: Updated:
Vestal, N.Y. - Binghamton Men's basketball (1-2) put six players in double figures and shot 58 percent in a 107-64 win over visiting Misericordia Monday night at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center.
Freshman guard Sam Sessoms, earlier in the day named America East Rookie of the Week, led all scorers with 18 points. Sessoms, averaging 19.3 points three games into his promising collegiate career, hit 7-of-12 shots and added five boards, four assists and three steals.
The Bearcats used a 19-8 run midway through the first half to take control, stretching a one-point lead to 12, 36-24, with 7:27 remaining. Sessoms had 15 of his points in the first half.
After a solid shooting half to start, Misericordia only managed eight fields over the game's final 20 minutes and BU was plus 30 on the board to extend the final margin.
"I was happy that our team was mature about the game," head coach Tommy Dempsey said. "You have to respect your opponent ... they were in the NCAA tournament last year and were picked to win their conference so I knew they would come in with a decent group. We knew we needed a win tonight and the guys were ready to go and they came out and took care of business."
Senior forward Chancellor Barnard converted 7-of-8 field goals for his 15 points. Junior guard Richard Caldwell, Jr. netted 13 points and senior guard J.C. Show hit 4-of-7 three-pointers for 12 points. Senior forward Caleb Stewart (10 pts.) gave BU its sixth player in double figures. Senior guard Timmy Rose handed out nine assists - one off his career high.
