Week 2 of Section IV Football Ends with Cheers and Tears

Posted: Updated:

Week two is in the books -- But to commemorate the first home game of the Chenango Forks Blue Devils' 2018 football season, fans, players, friends and fellow coaches took to the center of the field at halftime to honor the loss of volunteer football coach, John Petley at the age of 71.

The ceremony began as Carol Petley (John's wife) was walked down a tunnel of Blue Devils' fans, students, faculty and friends, and met with a plaque in honor of her late husband. After receiving several hugs from football players and John's former coaching staff, Carol was given arrangements of flowers and a collage of memories from John's years with the team.

John Petley was never a person that needed to be seen on the sidelines, he was more content with helping the team improve behind the scenes, according to Blue Devils' QB Jakob Topa. "He'll be missed," Topa added.

Section IV high school football continued Saturday with teams like Chenango Forks mirroring their 2017 season, starting off 2-0, while others like Binghamton begin on the reverse side of the win column and stare at a record of 0-2.

For some teams their finger is hovering just over the "panic button," but most are content focusing on the next game only. Either way you slice it, the 2018 season of local high school football is already shaping up to be a good one.
