High School Baseball State Playoffs Comes to an EndPosted: Updated:
Of the two teams left from Section IV baseball, Seton Catholic Central and Deposit-Hancock, only one of them claimed a NY State Title, Saturday.
Competing in the Class B New York State Public High School Athletics Association (NYSPHSAA) Championship, the Seton Catholic Saints faced a top ranked team in the Center Moriches Red Devils at NYSEG Stadium.
Early on, the Saints jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead with Leo Gallagher getting the start on the mound. After pitching 5 innings, and giving up 5 runs, the Saints decided to relieve Gallagher with the 7-5 lead. But things didn't go Seton's way after that. Center Moriches was able to make the 6th inning a 7 run collection to take the outright lead.
After the damage was done by the Red Devils, the Saints couldn't climb back in the final half inning. They would fall to Center Moriches by a final score of 10-7, and come just short of claiming a State Championship.
In the Class D NYSPHSAA Championship, the Deposit-Hancock Eagles met the Fort Plain Hilltoppers at Binghamton University.
Combining in 2016, Deposit and Hancock Schools soared to new heights in 2018. Eagle's starting pitcher, Owen Wormuth went 5 1/3 innings, recording five strikeouts and four walks, before being relieved by Cole Russell and Luke Resti in the final innings.
Over the innings Wormuth pitched to the Hilltoppers, he allowed three runs. But thanks to the tremendous offense of his supporting cast, Deposit-Hancock never allowed Fort Plain to take the lead.
The Eagles racked up 9+ hits, with Cole Russell accounting for three of them, while also driving in the game's first run.
Deposit-Hancock, led by head coach Brandon Olbrys, would go on to beat the Hilltoppers by a final score of 9-3, claiming the team's first ever State Title.
