Weather becomes Factor in Deposit Softball State Playoff HopesPosted: Updated:
The Deposit Lady Lumberjacks and Eldred Yellow Jackets were unable to beat the rain, Friday, postponing the New York State Public High School Athletics Association (NYSPHSAA) Class D Regional game until tomorrow, Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
Still riding high behind Deposit's All-Star pitcher, junior Makenzie Stiles' perfect game during the Section IV Class D Championship a week ago, the Lady Jacks get an extra day to prepare against the Yellow Jackets.
But does the game's postponement stifle the momentum of Deposit's offense and defense? According to Lady Jacks' head coach, Dan Briggs, it's a blessing in disguise.
"As soon as we got here they told us that, 'We're going to push the game up.' So we kind of rushed around a little bit, didn't get fully warmed up," said Dan Briggs.
Briggs said the officials decided to move the game's start time due to inclement weather approaching Union-Endicott High School. And with the warm temperatures reaching over 90°, he was unsure how rushing his girls to prepare for a tough game could adversely affect his team's chances of winning.
"It was warm when we got here, they lost a lot through sweat. So, moving the game back a day will give them another day of rest and preparation," said Briggs.
Deposit and Eldred will continue their game tomorrow, Saturday at 6:00 p.m. Briggs said Makenzie Stiles will be getting the start on the mound for the Lumberjacks.
