Albany Defends AEast Softball Championship TitlePosted: Updated:
Although the Binghamton Bearcats softball team was unable to make it to the America East Softball Championship due to a loss to Albany and Maine on Thursday, fans can take solace in the fact the New York still holds the title of AEast Champions.
Sunday, the Albany Great Danes defended their 2017 title with heart and determination, taking home the hardware and the 2018 AEast Softball Championship.
In a two game set, Albany downed the UMass Lowell Riverhawks in both games. Down by a pair of runs in the first match, Danes' Sarah Petzoldlaunched a three run blast in the 6th inning that gave her team the outright lead, and the win of the first set, 4-3.
Things were a little different in game #2. Starting off with a two run lead, Albany's pitcher Maranda Jimenez went the full distance, allowing 7 hits and only 1 run for the complete game victory. Again, Petzold came up clutch to knock in a 2 RBI double that put the game out of the Riverhawks' reach, 4-1.
According to Great Danes' Head Coach, Chris Cannata, Albany has only two seniors on its roster. But being a youthful team doesn't matter when many of the women on the team have witnessed the success of last year's championship run.
"We had quite a few number of people on the field last year as sophomores so we have some experience," said Chris Cannata.
With the win today, the Albany Great Danes have secured a bid in the 2018 NCAA Softball Playoffs, which are set to begin Friday, May 18, 2018.
