SV Sabers Kickoff Baseball season with Win over SetonPosted: Updated:
After starting the high school baseball season with two games postponed due to weather, the Susquehanna Valley Sabers (1-0) were finally able to hit the field Monday afternoon and secure a close victory over the Seton Catholic Central Saints (0-1), 2-1.
For the first three innings, a pitchers duel between Saints' Peter Hartrick and Sabers' Dominick Chesna limited the bats of both teams. Both players on the mound collected a handful of respectable strikeouts while limiting hits to only 1 between the pair.
But things heated up in the bottom of the 4th inning. First to take the plate for SV, Dan Matthews watched as his count went to 2-balls and 1-strike. On the fourth pitch, Matthews locked into Hartricks high-fastball and took it for a ride over the left field wall.
Dan Matthews solo-homerun was the first score of the night, and gave the Sabers the one-run lead they needed to secure a victory over the Saints, 2-1.
Susquehanna Valley will return to action Wednesday, as they host Chenango Forks at 4:30 p.m.
Seton Catholic will also be playing Wednesday. They will be traveling to Windsor for an evening game, first pitch is set for 4:30 p.m.
