Fire Rips Through Home in Barton

Posted: Updated:
BARTON, N.Y. -

A fire razed a home in Tioga County in the wee hours of the morning Tuesday.

Multiple fire departments in the area responded to a house fire around 1 a.m. at 8 West Whitcomb Road in Barton, N.Y. Firefighters arrived on the scene to find the home fully engulfed in flames.

The structure eventually collapsed and Tioga County Director of Emergency Services Mike Simmons confirmed that an excavator was brought in to tear the house down to assist firefighters. Investigators explained that the fire is easier to put out with the structure on the ground.

Investigators were on the scene this morning.

"We came back this morning to see if we got more information about how the fire started, and we are unable to do that. So it’s going to be undetermined." - Frank Okrasinski, Tioga County Fire Investigation Team

Okrasinski said the investigation into the cause of the fire has been made difficult by the excavator spreading debris of the home.

There have been no reported injuries and the investigation is ongoing. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family who lost everything in the fire.
