Delhi Girls are your Class D State ChampionsPosted: Updated:
During overtime...Franklinville's time was over -- Delaware Academy's (Delhi) Lady Bulldogs basketball team upset the previously unbeaten Franklinville Panthers, Sunday, with a buzzer-beating three-pointer to extend the Class D State Championship for a Delhi victory, 54-51 at Hudson Valley Community College.
After an in-bounding pass with just over :05 seconds remaining in regulation, Logan Bruce, who ended up with 16 points in the victory, sank the long-ball to give Delhi the extra strength they needed in OT. This momentum swing gave Bulldogs senior Olivia Wakin a push to knock in a layup, while picking up a foul in the process, to add three points and give Delhi a 52-51 lead over Franklinville with :51 seconds left in the extra period.
But what made the game special was the containment of Franklinville's sophomore guard Danielle Haskell, who finished the game with 33 points. Logan Bruce's task of guarding Haskell was nearly impossible, but after Danielle missed a deep three-pointer near the end of overtime...it was all Delhi needed from Bruce. Olivia Wakin was able to snag the loose ball and run out the clock.
After the buzzer sounded, and a mess of Bulldogs were cleaned up from a huge dog-pile, it was Logan Bruce earning the title of Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the Class D Championship.
Delaware Academy will continue their season in the Federation Tournament, which begins Friday, March 23.
