Suicide, The #1 Killer Of Emergency Responders

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -

Suicide is the #1 killer of emergency responders in the United States according to the National Police Suicide Foundation. Director of the foundation, Dr. Robert Douglas, says the most common reason is relationships.

"They don't know how to make the transition from the street to the home. We teach them how to do everything else, but we do not teach them how to effectively communicate with their family," says Douglas.

Other than relationships, the natural stress of the job also contributes to depression and suicide rates among police, firefighters, and other emergency personnel. Douglas works to help first responders communicate effectively with their support systems.
