Alicea named AEast Player of the Year; other Bearcats honored

ALBANY, N.Y. - Junior outside hitter Gaby Alicea has been named America East Volleyball Player of the Year while senior setter Sarah Ngo earned America East Setter of the Year honors. The announcement was made on Thursday night at the America East Conference Annual Awards Banquet, which precedes the conference tournament.

In addition, Alicea was named first-team all-conference while Ngo and senior middle hitter Lexi LaGoy were named to the second team and the all-academic team. Freshman libero Samantha Gioiosa earned a spot on the all-rookie team as well.

Alicea is the first player in Binghamton volleyball history to be named Player of the Year and the first Binghamton athlete named AE Player of the Year in any sport since Sydney Harbaugh (softball) in 2014. Alicea earned America East Player of the Week honors three times this season and was named the Binghamton Athletics Miller Auto Team Athlete of the Week twice. She finished the regular season ranked first in the conference in kills (3.68 per set) and points (4.28 per set).

Ngo is the second Bearcat to be named America East Volleyball Setter of the Year (Amanda Dettmann, 2012). She was named AE Setter of the Week three times this season and seven times throughout her career. Ngo ranks second in the conference with a 10.16 assists per set average. She has also posted 309 digs this season.

LaGoy leads the conference in hitting percentage (.328)  ranks second on the Binghamton team with 44 total blocks this season and third in kills (2.12 kills per set average).

Gioiosa has appeared in all 96 sets for the Bearcats this season. She leads the team and sits sixth in the conference with a 4.00 digs per set average.

Ngo, a Business Administration Graduate Student, currently has a 3.79 GPA. She has been named to the America East Commissioner's Honor Roll and the Binghamton Athletics AD Honor Roll all three years she has been at Binghamton. She was inducted into the National College Athlete Honor Society in 2016 (Chi Alpha Sigma) and earned the SUNY Chancellor Award in 2016. LaGoy, an Anthropology major, currently has a 3.65 GPA. She was also inducted into the National College Athlete Honor Society in 2016. LaGoy was named to the America East Honor Roll in 2014, 2015 and 2016 and also earned Binghamton AD Honor Roll status in all three seasons.

All voting for post-season awards and honors were done by America East coaches, none of whom were allowed to vote for their own team and/or players.

The Bearcats will play New Hampshire in the America East semifinals on Friday, November 17 at 4 p.m. at University Gym on Albany's campus.
