Two charged with stealing construction equipmentPosted: Updated:
Broome County Sheriff’s late Sunday night observed vehicle with its headlights on in the construction lot at the intersection of Upper Front St. and the Route 81 southbound, exit 5 on-ramp. The vehicle then pulled out of the lot and traveled south on Front St. It was unusual for any persons to be in the construction lot at this time of night so Deputy Kelly conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and identified the occupants as Donald House and Jacob Gonzalez.
Deputy Kelly found construction tools and equipment in the vehicle, as well as bolt cutters; the occupants could not provide a valid reason why they were in the construction lot. The investigation revealed the locks on multiple storage trailers in the construction lot had been cut off. Donald and Jacob were held until a representative of the construction company arrived and identified several items in the suspect’s vehicle as belonging to his company; they were then arrested for Criminal Possession of Stolen Property.
Due to the large number of items in the vehicle that came from the construction yard, the vehicle was impounded at the Broome County Sheriff’s Office while the investigation continues.
Donald and Jacob were arraigned before the Town of Barker Justice on the charges of Criminal Possession of Stolen Property and Possession of Burglar’s Tools. Both were remanded to the Broome County Sheriff’s Correctional Facility with no bail.
The Broome County Sheriff’s Detective Division assisted patrol Deputies with the investigation.
