Walk For Climate Change - 8/3/2009
You've heard a lot about global warming these days, but one woman is taking her awareness message to the streets. We caught up with Greta Browne Monday, a woman who's walking across the country hoping to put an end to climate change.
This trusty old R.V.and one determined woman gives new meaning to hitting the road.
"I couldn't just stay at home and sit," said Greta Browne.
65 year old Greta Browne--a retired environmentalist who's walking for climate change for her three grandchildren.
"And I got scared for my grandchildren,I got heartsick, because I don't want them to be in a world that has terrible catastrophes," said Browne.
Hurricane Katrina is one catastrophe that prompted Browne to start her trek in New Orleans. she's followed Route 11 ever since-- all the way to Binghamton, where we caught up with her just North of Castle Creek--at a location she deemed perfect to pause and talk.
"There is a windmill up on the hill there and its one of the first I've seen during my walk, and it makes me very happy," said Browne.
Browne gets up every morning, rain or shine and walks 14 miles, at the end of the day she rests in the back of her R.V., that she calls the gypsy wagon.
"Its got a stove, a bathroom, a refrigerator," said Browne.
So far Browne's walked 886 miles, mostly by herself, but Browne says she didn't start feeling lonely until she got near Binghamton, and the habits of North easterners
"We ignore each others presence, we avert our eyes when we walk towards each other, we kind of turn away, and I learn down South that everyone says how are ya doing, everyone says it," said Browne.
But Browne says she hopes her journey will cause people to think about reducing their carbon footprint, especially the trucking industry.
"We need to gradually transition from transporting every thing we need to all over the country, to where we shop local, but things locally so we don't have to have the trucks," said Browne.
Browne's got about 300 miles to go before ending up in Rowsey Point, New York.
She says if you see her, make sure and wave, it'll put a little bounce in her step.
