Sex Offenders Outlawed from Serving as Volunteer Fire, Ambulance

Registered sex offenders can no longer be members of volunteer fire or ambulance companies in New York, thanks to a new law just signed by Governor Cuomo.

The law also provides for the termination of membership of any current volunteer who is found to be convicted of these offenses.  This legislation would allow volunteer fire chiefs to access existing public record information on registered sex offenders, in a similar fashion that an arson background check is currently required for all prospective members.
