New Grocery Store To Come to Binghamton
7/30/2014 (Updated 6:45:18 PM)A long-awaited grocery store will finally be coming to the north side of Binghamton.
Mayor Rich David announced the new development in the former Big Lots building on West State Street. The $4 million project will revamp the space into a 10 to 14 thousand square foot shop called Grocery City Market. The plaza will be called the West State Street Plaza. Those working on the project say this central location will benefit all residents on the north side.
Jim Mailloux of Xirrod Development Lroup LLC said, "People have a lot of difficulty just getting to the store, so when you look at local consumption, it might not be because they don't have enough money or because they can't use their benefit cards to get the groceries, they just can't get there."
Binghamton Mayor Rich David (R) said, "When I went door to door over the summer, I knocked on many, many homes on the north side. And the number one priority was making this grocery store a reality. That's what people wanted."
The project will also include a striping and landscaping of the parking lot. The grocery store is expected to be open by spring of 2015.
