Governor Signs Legislation Adding 20 Family Court Judges Positions

Among the bills the Governor signed is a law that adds 20 Family Court Judges in New York State, including one in Broome County.

The bill's sponsor Donna Lupardo, says it will help address the heroin epidemic.  The new judge will help handle the added workload created by a new law that requires substance abuse assessments of at-risk youth who come through the family court system.

"We're basically requiring that kids at risk of substance abuse be assessed when they come through the Family Court system. The package of bills was very pro-active in many ways," said Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo (D-123rd District).

Candidates for the new Family Court Judge position will have a special petitioning process for two weeks next month to get on the ballot for november.
