Owego Elects New Fire Chief

After nearly 40 firefighters from the Owego Fire Department handed in their uniforms last week, the village is looking to move forward.

A motion was passed during tonight's village board meeting to accept the letters of resignation as written. The meeting also held an election to fill all, positions including fire chief. Daniel Gavin will fill that position and said although he's sad to see members leave, he's ready to move on.

"There has been a lot of movement. Some members gave chose to go to other departments, neighboring departments. My department is still strong, we just voted in myself and chief, and we have a new first and second assistant chief, plus a deputy administrative assistant chief. We're anxious to move this department in the positive direction it needs," said Daniel Gavin, Chief, Owego Fire Department.

Gavin says the firefighters are working to improve their training, and that the community has nothing to worry about in terms of safety.
