B-Mets fall to Rock Cats 3-2 for the second straight night

NEW BRITAIN, CT - Despite a twelve-strikeout performance by Matt Bowman and eleven hits from the offense, the Binghamton Mets fell to the New Britain Rock Cats, 3-2, on Saturday night at New Britain Stadium. The B-Mets stranded 13 runners on base and suffered their third loss in four games.

For the first time in four games, the B-Mets cracked the scoreboard first. Kyle Johnson and Brian Burgamy started the game with back-to-back singles off starter Virgil Vasquez. With runners at the corners, Kevin Plawecki ripped a sacrifice fly to left field, his 28th RBI in the month of May.

The Rock Cats answered back in the third against B-Mets starter Matt Bowman. Corey Wimberly started the inning with an infield single to short and Nate Hanson followed by getting clipped by an 0-1 pitch. Kennys Vargas tied the game with a bloop single to shallow left-center and Brad Boyer pushed New Britain ahead by rolling a two-out, RBI single up the middle.

Binghamton countered with a two-out rally in the fifth. Matt Clark started the charge with a bloop single to center. Jayce Boyd kept the play alive with an infield single to short and Darrell Ceciliani tied the game at two by dumping an RBI single to right.

New Britain struck right back in the bottom of the inning. Daniel Ortiz ripped a one-out double down the right-field line, took third on a single and scampered home when Bowman bounced an 0-2 pitch in the dirt with Reynaldo Rodriguez at the plate.

Given a one-run lead, Vasquez capped his night with a scoreless sixth, stranding two more batters in his final frame. Mark Hamburger left two more aboard in a scoreless seventh before posting a blank eighth. Lester Oliveros worked around a two-out walk in the ninth to earn his seventh save of the season.

Bowman (3-3) allowed three runs on ten hits over seven innings in the loss. The righty struck out six of the final nine batters he faced in his sixth-straight winless start. Vasquez (3-2) surrendered two runs on nine hits while stranding nine runners in six innings of work in the victory.

The B-Mets (30-24) conclude their three-game series and look to avoid the sweep on Sunday afternoon at 1:35 PM. RHP Greg Peavey gets the nod against LHP Pat Dean.
