Medical Marijuana Bill Headed to Senate
5/28/2014 (Updated 10:52:33 PM)More than 20 states across the country have legalized medicinal marijuana--and New York may be added to the list.
The State Assembly has passed the Compassionate Care Act, which is now headed to the Senate.
Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo co-sponsored the act.
She says the Assembly has passed it before, but this is the first time the Senate Health Commission has voted yes.
She says it's time for the entire Senate to pass the bill.
"We have heard from constituents from across the state. There's overwhelming public support for it. Because this is an important component of certain health care treatments. And many doctors are imploring us to give them this option for people," said Donna Lupardo, NYS Assembly (D) 123rd District.
Lupardo says if the act does pass, the state will strictly regulate who can get a prescription.
She says she knows of at least five upstate Republican senators who have expressed support for the act.
