Nearly 400 students from across the Southern Tier gathered at Binghamton University to share their original poems.
As part of the 37th Annual Poetry and the Children day, the students had their poems compiled into a book--and the chance to perform their poems live on stage.
Featured poet, Joe Weil, says being able to share your work at a young age produces what he calls a "culture of success."
"When you start to have a success, like if you're in 2nd grade and there's your poem in a book, it makes you hungry to do more things that make you proud. that gives you satisfaction. So this is vital to the children. It's vital to their sense of self and also to their idea that creativity is something that will be rewarded," said Weil.
The program is a tribute to Robert Pawlikowski -- a published poet and creative writing instructor at B.U. until his death in 1975.
